WHAT IS REPOINTING?

Ridge capping has two levels of adhesives holding them into place. First is the bedding, which is a type of mortar that holds the ridge capping in place and sets the ridge at a correct level on the roof. Ridge capping pointing is a second layer that goes over the existing bedding, filling in the space between the bedding and the ridge cap. This creates a stronger hold to keep your ridge tiles in place and adds an extra protective layer against water and dirt.

Repointing used to use a sand/cement mixture, but a more flexible compound that has been in use in Australia since the ‘90s has replaced this. Compounds that are more flexible allow the roof to contract and expand as the temperature changes, which in turn leads to less cracking and deterioration.
In some circumstances, it may be required to re-bed the ridge capping, which just means that the ridge capping mortar needs to be replaced. However, most of the time the ridge capping is able to be repointed without the added cost of re-bedding.

If your home or your home’s roof was built 10 years ago or longer, we encourage you to have your roof inspected and repointed in order to avoid cracking mortar and leaks. Repointing every 10 years or so is also recommended to avoid any deterioration.
